- the mother series -
We are constantly transforming between roles as women as we journey through all of the stations of our life; from managers, daughters, employees, sisters, friends, lovers, dreamers, doers, advocates. Few transitions are so dramatic as the transformation into motherhood. Our body grows to accommodate a being of our making as we become both vessel and woman, shouldering our own identities with the emergence of a new being from within us. Then to postpartum life, where our body transforms yet again, returning to itself, but also becoming something new, different. The negotiation continues.
How does our style support this? How can apparel make our lives easier, solidify our identities, create a constant amidst change? Can it communicate our nuances while still fostering our development, remaining fluid, yet consistent?
Over the course of a year artist Hallie Brewer documented two friends, Ann Edgerton and Alice Willett Fox, as their bodies and their lives transformed with pregnancy and new motherhood. They were photographed in the same dresses from our collection throughout their pregnancy. We asked them to share their thoughts on style and their approach to shopping ethically for themselves and for their little ones.
“This project proved to be more special than I could have imagined. These two women have been a part of my life for so long. I’ve been witness to many changes in their lives, from new marriage, to starting businesses, to moving across the country and back again. But no change has been as great as becoming new mothers. It’s been a privilege to be alongside, documenting and discovering how their lives and their bodies have evolved to welcome this miracle.” -Hallie Brewer
